trust
[noun]
A sense of assurance, reliance, or genuine care. The foundation of our faith, trust is often illustrated as a cross: our belief in the goodness of God intersects horizontally with our commitment to the goodness and dignity of those around us.
Learning to trust in God is not a one-time event. It happens over and over (and over again) as we live through times of uncertainty, loss, doubt, abundance, and joy. Here are five ways you can learn to “relax and float” as you deepen your trust in God’s love:
- Pray freely and openly to God, holding nothing back from the conversation.
- Explore the Scriptures, contemplating how God engages with us throughout history.
- Let go of expectations, allowing yourself to let God be God (and not how you want God to act).
- Reflect on God’s faithfulness in your own life, reliving those moments of grace and peace.
- Find fellowship in communion with others, embracing community and stories of renewal.
Above all, be patient with God and with yourself. When fear and doubt find you, as they are known to do, rest in the goodness and mercy of God.
Dear God,
When I think of how hard sometimes it is for me to trust, You show me how easy it is if I just let go. If I just let go of my expectations, my lists of wants, my fears and anxieties and hold Your hand instead. And just trust, just as Peter did when he walked over the water, trusting in You, in Your Word. Please continue to hold my hand as I let go, continue to show me that You know what is better for me because You designed my life so beautifully. Amen.
