sacrifice
[noun]
A selfless act that gives up something of value for the benefit of another. Jesus’s life shows us how to sacrifice: to give freely and without recognition. Big or small, any sacrifice we make is an offering of love—and one that expands our hearts, too.
Why sacrifice? Why not play it safe? Why do I have to help? In the confusion and noise of today’s world, it can be hard to hear the whisper of God calling us to give more of ourselves. Yet, Jesus makes it very clear: “Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mind, you did for me.” (Mt: 25:40)
When we make a sacrifice or take a risk in helping others, we translate our faith into action. That action allows God’s love to flow through us and out into the world. It’s a way of giving thanks and making God known. From small acts of mercy to the ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made with his life, the practice of sacrifice invites us to go beyond ourselves and our fears and choose love instead.
Dear God,
You made the ultimate sacrifice for us. You showed us that love and faith require sacrifice and giving beyond ourselves. Help me see where I can help others. I want to practice my faith more intentionally every day for the good of Your people. Amen.
What sacrifice can you make today?
