holy
[adjective]
Dedicated to the service of God or recognized as sacred by a religion. Holiness is available to everyone, not just the saints or a select few. We are all called to pursue holiness by saying “yes” to God and loving as freely as Jesus did.
Holiness is an ongoing process and a daily commitment. It’s about living in union with God, while also caring for our neighbors and the suffering in the world.
Holiness is often confused with perfection, but they are quite different. Perfection is exalted. Holiness is humble. Perfection is a solo pursuit. Holiness is a partnership with God. To journey toward holiness is to put aside our fears and to reflect the heart of God that always welcomes, forgives, and lifts up.
Holiness is born of love. It is expressed through acts of mercy and revealed in compassion. Holiness does not wound, judge or exclude.
We don’t have to be perfect to be holy. We just have to be willing.
Dear God,
I strive for holiness every day, but the worldly distractions and my own humanness pull me away from it. Hold me close to your merciful heart when I confuse perfection with holiness. I want to do good and I want to be good. Show me your grace through the many holy men and women that have come before me. I want to be like them, and one day, be next to you in heaven. Amen.
