grace

A calm state of mind, free of worry and disturbance. A simple elegance, an unexpected gift, or pleasing effect. Grace often takes us by surprise because it is a gift from God, given freely and without condition. God’s grace reminds us how deeply we are loved and invites us to love in the same way.

If everything is grace, then every moment is an opportunity for us to see God’s presence in our lives. This is what St. Ignatius taught in the 1500s and it still applies today.

St. Ignatius believed that God can be found in all things, at any time, in any place. From the morning chorus of birds to the lilies of the valley, from a moment of triumph to our experiences of defeat, God is here with us. According to St. Ignatius, “all things are presented to us so that we can know God more easily and make a return of love more readily.”

God’s grace requires our participation. We welcome in God’s grace and are invited to open our hearts to share that love with the people we like and the people we don’t like so much. Grace (like God), always embraces and never discriminates.

Prayer for Today

Dear God,

Your grace is all around me. I see it in the birds chirping, waking me with their morning song. I see it in the sun rising, letting me know I am alive and I am here to see another day. I feel it in the warm smile from a stranger and the patience from the people around me. Your grace is a gift of love to me, that calls me to share Your love. Help me not to lose sight of Your love and grace. Amen.

Where can you find grace today?
