What is the definition of sanctuary?

In a word: holy. A sanctuary is a holy place where we go to dwell with God. We can find sanctuary in our hearts, in a church, or by the sea. Whenever we seek solace and safety from the latest storm, a sanctuary reminds us that God is always near.

Where do we find sacred places?

By definition, sanctuaries are not limited to one place. The innermost workings of your heart can be a sanctuary as much as your bedroom, a pine grove, a shrine, a place of safety, or the altar during Mass. Sanctuaries are holy because we experience the presence of God, and are forever changed.  

Examples abound in scripture: Elijah experienced God in a whisper; Moses, through a burning bush; and, Paul, in prison Even Jesus sought sanctuary—as an infant fleeing Egypt, as a child hiding in the temple, and as an adult praying fervently in the mountains, the desert, and the garden.

Why should we seek sanctuary?

We all need sanctuary at different times in our lives. Maybe we need a place to rest. Perhaps we want to worship, make amends, or discern our next steps. Maybe we ache for stillness or a place of refuge. Seeking sanctuary is a normal, and healthy, part of every faith journey. Reconnecting with God, and then giving that love back to the world, is what renews our faith.

Dear God, 

When life gets tough, You are my refuge; in You I find protection. All I have to do is take a deep breath, close my eyes, and You are right there, in my heart, stretching out Your arms to comfort me and bring me peace. And, whether I’m standing by the ocean, in the forest, or beside a stream, there You are too. You offer me shelter in the sanctuary of Your creation where the sunlight embraces me, where the wind whispers Your words of comfort, and where the birdsong delights my heart so I can carry that joy wherever I go. Thank You, Lord, for always being my refuge. Amen.
