forgiveness

Letting go of any resentment against a person or a group of people who hurt you. Forgiveness is a gift of mercy, an act of love. Seeking revenge is deceptive, a false promise of comfort and happiness. We are called to forgive.

Forgiveness does not mean forgetting. It is a courageous and loving act that restores our souls. Forgiveness is never a justification for the hurtful actions of others. It is letting go with love and giving ourselves the opportunity to live freely without the weight of resentment, condemnation, and rejection. Forgiveness allows us the chance to believe and love again.

Sometimes, we also need to be forgiven. When we seek forgiveness for ourselves, we are looking to be seen, to be understood, and to be trusted again. We all want a second chance.

Just like in the Our Father prayer, we must ask for mercy and be merciful too. Forgiveness is a gift for two, helping us to live more fully and to love more freely.

Prayer for Today

Dear God,

Take away any resentment that is still lingering in my heart. Sometimes it is hard to forgive those who have caused pain to me or those I love. Help me understand our humanity and forgive those who trespass against us. Deliver us from the evil of resentment and lead us into Your light of mercy. Amen.

We are all capable of forgiving. How can we show forgiveness to ourselves and others today?

“Forgive us our trespassers as we forgive those who trepass against us.”

Matthew 6:12
