truth

A fact, state of being, or transcendent reality. In Catholic social teaching, God is the source of truth, and truth is separate from opinion and universal in nature. Because bias and hatred are often confused with truth, we must seek truth with an open heart.

We are currently living in a world that is swirling with questions about truth. Is this real news or fake news? Did that really happen or is that an AI-generated video? Is this a fact or propaganda?

In the world of faith, finding truth can also be challenging. It is easy to equate truth with God—but not so easy to define what God’s truth is exactly. We know that faith calls us to journey with God, to wrestle with our understandings, to pray and grow in our relationship with God. At the same time, God invites us to live out our faith, to be steadfast in mercy, to love the stranger, and to share our resources.

In this way, taken together, our prayers and our actions allow God to reveal who God is, what God’s truth is, and who God is calling us to be.

Prayer for Today

Dear God,

We live in a very noisy world where everyone seems to hold the “truth” about something or everything. And sometimes it feels hard to hear You or to even speak about You, Your love, mercy and grace. Help me encounter those who seek You with love and an open heart. Help me listen with compassion and speak Your truth with courage and inspiration. Amen.

Where do you seek Truth?

“Let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.”

 John 3:18
