mystic
[Nom]
In Christian tradition, a mystic is a person who has an intimate relationship with God through contemplative prayer, meditation and Scripture. We can all be mystics if we are open to discerning the mysteries of God.
What is a mystic?
Although Christian mysticism involves a degree of mystery, it is not an esoteric or supernatural experience reserved for a select few. We are all called to be mystics, just as we are all called to be saints. Each of us is invited to the same intimate closeness with God that calms us, gives us peace, and draws us closer to God’s heart. That closeness is a mystical experience.
The great mystics of history, such as Saint Teresa of Ávila, Saint John of the Cross, and the Virgin Mary, also went through moments of spiritual desert having moments of doubt, sorrow, and emptiness. However, the receptiveness of their hearts during these times allowed them to see, hear, and understand what God wanted to do in them. Through their mystical paths they transformed many lives.
Can I be a mystic in today’s world?
Yes, we can do this as a spiritual practice. St. John of the Cross teaches that we must see the light in our darkest moments. We must seek that light of Christ that illuminates our being so that we may see through God’s eyes, understand the suffering of others, and be the light of the world. That is how we can live a mystical experience in our daily lives.
In other words, to be mystics, we must make space in our lives to contemplate God’s Word, and pray to develop a Christ-like sensitivity that leads us to accompany and love our neighbor.
Prière pour aujourd’hui
Oh mon Dieu
Keep from me all noise, and all distractions that draw me away from You. Strengthen my spirit as I journey through the deserts of my spiritual life. Be with me in my solitude, and when I do not feel Your presence, whisper my name so that I may know You are with me. Prepare my heart so that I may know how to wait, listen, pray, and act in Your name, accompanying those who are far from You. Amen.
Which mystic inspires you?
“Spiritual progress tends toward ever more intimate union with Christ. This union is called ‘mystical’ because it participates in the mystery of Christ through the sacraments — ‘the holy mysteries’ — and, in him, in the mystery of the Holy Trinity. God calls us all to this intimate union with him.” (#2014)
