U.S. Catholic magazine earned several awards from the Associated Church Press (ACP) during this year’s annual awards competition, recognizing editorial topics ranging from liturgical art to women’s preaching, scripture to personal faith.

“What stands out to me about this year’s awards is how strongly they recognize the heart of our editorial mission: thoughtful reporting and theologically grounded reflections,” said Emily Sanna, executive editor of U.S. Catholic. “To see our writers honored across such different categories suggests there is a real hunger for Catholic journalism that is intellectually serious, pastorally attentive, and unafraid to engage difficult questions.”

Revista católica

U.S. Catholic has been published by the USA-Canada Province of the Claretian Missionaries for more than 90 years. A courageous and forward-thinking magazine, it explores the vibrancy and diversity of contemporary Catholicism. Today, more than 1.2 million readers turn to us as they strive to live out their faith in our complex world.

Honors included:

Award of Excellence (First Place) — James Solheim Award for Editorial Courage, for “Story of a soul,” by Dani Jiménez

The Solheim Award recognizes journalists and publications that demonstrate exceptional bravery and conviction in tackling difficult or controversial topics. It is named for James Solheim, longtime director of the Episcopal News Service, who died in 2012. The ACP judges noted: “This personal story describes the courage it takes to be true to one’s self. That it appears in a Catholic periodical says a lot about its writers and the editors who published it.”

Award of Excellence (First Place) — In-Depth Coverage, for “Ever ancient, ever new,” by Gabriella Patti

“The only bad thing about this article is that it appeared in print,” wrote the ACP judges. “Kudos to the artists for attempting to bring more people to the world’s worship spaces, and for the writer, who brought the experience to the page.”

Award of Excellence (First Place) — Biblical Interpretation or Lectionary Reflection, for “Never give up,” by Emily Sanna

Award of Merit (Second Place) — Denominational Politics, for “The women behind the pulpit,” by Kelly Sankowsky

Special congratulations to our U.S. Catholic team for their commitment to high-quality Catholic journalism that is justice-seeking and unafraid of complexity. At a time when easy answers feel out of grasp and division feels unavoidable, we continue to accompany readers who are asking hard questions with honesty and care.
